Five Light Pieces (2008)
– Plein Jeu
– en Taille
– Pièce Croisée
– En Trio
– Grand Jeu
These pieces were written also to be playable on old organs with limited keyboard range. For the manuals the range used is C-c”’, for the pedal C-d’.
Few registration changes are needed. Parts 1 and 4 can even be played on one registration. On larger organs, certain passages can be highlighted by adding subtle color differences. For example, in part 2 from bars 52 to 85, a flute 4′ can be added, as well as in part 4 at bars 40 and 59.
The level of difficulty varies: parts 2 and 4 are relatively easy, part 3 has a very simple pedal part, but parts 1 and 5 require more technical skills.
The word ‘light’ in the title is therefore not intended in the sense of technically simple, but rather in the sense of accessible, easily digestible, especially in comparison with much other music from the twentieth century.
The five parts can be played as a whole in this order, in a combination of some parts, or separately.
The video below plays some excerpts from parts 1, 2 and 3.
