Compositions, introduction an survey

These works were created not long ago, after a period in which composing more or less came to a standstill. Although I improvised and composed at a young age, it was mainly concertizing and teaching that determined the beginning of my career.
Another reason was the contrast that existed during my student days between new and old music. There seemed to be only supporters and opponents of one direction or the other. My high school agendas were full of 12-tone themes, which I tried to imagine in canon, I improvised with clusters and dissonances. At the same time I was fascinated by the new performances of old music, then still emerging, but full of promise for a deeper understanding of that music.
But there was little support for my ambition to compose in the polarised musical environment of my student days. It was only with the work for Stichting voor de Wind, in which we sought a broader audience for the art of the organ, and initially piggybacking on the latest music in which consonance, repetition and recognisable elements were given a place again, that I developed a style of writing that was also appreciated by the audience. This led to the Five Light Pieces and later a series of works with different stylistic approaches, which, judging by the reactions, nevertheless led to a recognisable musical idiom. Supported by Hugo Bakker, as publisher of Valeurajoutee, and later by Peter van der Zwaag, who picked up this thread at Boeijenga, these works have become accessible and new compositions are still appearing.

Most of the works below can be viewed separately on the other pages, with an explanation and usually a recording.
