This arrangement of Mendelssohn's Variations Sérieuses has become a beloved repertoire piece for many organists.
Mendelssohn's piano music is generally more interesting than his organ music. But this work is perhaps his best piano composition, and in the organ version it forms an attractive addition to many concert programs. The possibilities to make the organ heard well by registration changes, the different playing styles, the convincing build-up of the variations to a large continuous line, the surprising ending, all together it is seen as an important organ work and played at many concerts and CD recordings.
The video recording above was made by Samuel Strijbis at the organ in the Sint Maarten in Zatbommel, the source of inspiration for this and many other arrangements.
